Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in our first therapy session?

Our initial intake session is 60 minutes and allows us to begin getting to know one another. During this time, we’ll explore what brings you to therapy, the challenges you may be navigating, and what you’re hoping to gain from our work together. We will also touch on important aspects of your personal history, relationships, past experiences with therapy, and the strengths you bring into this process.

How often will we meet?

Most clients begin with weekly sessions, as consistency helps build momentum and is often associated with the most meaningful progress in therapy. Over time, the frequency of sessions may shift depending on your needs.

Do we meet virtually or in person?

At this time, sessions are held virtually through a secure telehealth platform. Meeting online allows many clients to access therapy more easily from the comfort of their home or another private space, while still creating a meaningful and connected therapeutic experience.

Do you take insurance?

Illinois: We are in-network providers for Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO and Blue Choice plans. Once your first session is scheduled, we’re happy to call your insurance and verify your benefits for you.

Michigan: We currently offer self-pay sessions only.

What is your cancellation policy?

Appointments are reserved specifically for you, so we ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice, or missed appointments, are subject to a fee equal to the full session rate.

Because therapy works best when sessions are consistent and thoughtfully held, this policy helps ensure that the practice can continue to offer attentive, high-quality care while maintaining availability for all clients.

Do you prescribe medication?

While we do not have psychiatrists on staff who prescribe medication, we maintain trusted relationships with providers in both Illinois and Michigan. If medication support may be helpful, we’re happy to provide thoughtful referrals and help connect you with a provider who can offer a consultation.

Do I need to be pregnant or a parent to work with you?

Not at all. While SOMI has a special focus on fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition into parenthood, many clients come to therapy for other reasons. We work with individuals navigating anxiety, relationship challenges, life transitions, identity shifts, and other emotional experiences. You do not need to be pregnant or a parent to benefit from therapy here.

Do you work with partners or couples?

Yes. In addition to individual therapy, I offer couples therapy for partners who are looking to strengthen communication, navigate relationship challenges, or move through significant life transitions together. I am trained in the Gottman Method, an evidence-based approach that helps couples better understand one another, improve communication, and build a stronger foundation of trust and connection.
